AZALEA’S JOURNEY;
Azalea lived in WA for 16 years, but she was born and raised in Philadelphia. Ever since she could remember, she loved styling hair. Even when she was a little girl (8 years old), her mother bought her a Barbie head for Christmas, and she would style the head every chance she got. And when Azalea styled the Barbie head, something was fulfilling about it: “It felt good to her!”
Back in Philadelphia, everyone wore their hair in braids or weaves starting from the age of 6 and older. That being said when Azalea was about 10 years old, her mom styled her hair with Barretts and ballies. While other kids and students her age wore weaves, braids, or relaxers. Her mom tried to keep her a little girl as long as possible. But, her mother’s hair styling caused Azalea to be an outcast, which was hard for her at that age because kids can be mean.
One day, she woke up with a bright idea. She decided to get to school early to change her hairstyle in the girls’ restroom. And after school, she would change it back to the way her mother styled it! Her mom never knew the difference. By mimicking her mother’s style, she realized she had skills.
At the age of 12, Azalea’s mother permitted her to take control of her hair. And that’s when she got out of control with it. Azalea had a different style every week, from coloring to cutting to weaving to braiding, you name it. Looking back at her childhood pictures, she’s amazed at the hairstyles she performed on herself and others.
During this time, all the kids in her neighborhood loved her hairstyles. So she started styling all the girls’ hair in the neighborhood and cutting the boys’ hair every weekend for free. She styled their hair for free because she didn’t know she could charge. And even if she did know, she wouldn’t have wanted any money. She was fulfilled by patrons allowing her to style their hair “because it felt like fulfillment, it felt like purpose.”
At the age of 16, Azalea worked at her first hair salon, Sav’age on Ridge & Midvale, in Philadelphia. She performed weaves and braids. Then, she worked as a hair extension tech at Selective Beauty Salon in Philadelphia. And then, twice as an adult, she worked as a hair extension tech at Fantastic Cutz in Renton, WA.
In 2020, Azalea opened a storefront salon at 15033 Highway 99, Suite C, in Lynnwood while attending school. She attended Cosmetology, Master Esthetician, Nail Technician, Trichology, hair Loss Practitioner, Phlebotomy (which is needed for trichology), Henna brows, Eyelash extensions, and Cranial Prosthesis, all while maintaining a salon, which is why the salon space located on Highway 99 closed. It was challenging to manage a business while attending school.
As of now, Azalea is performing hair services at her home. She turned her whole basement into a full-service salon. She stands by the integrity and high-quality installations. It’s my mission that no one leaves this salon unhappy, and my 5-star salon rating proves that! She’ll love to help give you the makeover you’ve been desiring.
